MAAREC stands for Mid-Atlantic Apiculture Research and Extension Consortium. It is a collaborative effort between 7 universities in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States to support and promote honey bee health and sustainable beekeeping practices.
The consortium was formed in response to the growing threats facing honey bees, such as colony collapse disorder and the varroa mite infestation. These challenges have had devastating effects on honey bee populations, which are not only vital for honey production but also play a crucial role in pollinating crops.
The MAAREC initiative brings together researchers, extension specialists, and beekeepers to address these issues through research, education, and outreach programs. By collaborating and sharing knowledge, the consortium aims to develop effective strategies for honey bee health management, improve beekeeping practices, and increase public awareness about the importance of pollinators.
