The next two digits of the IME number represent the Reporting Body Identifier (RBI), which identifies the organization that allocated the TAC. These organizations are responsible for managing and maintaining the TAC database. The following six digits are the serial number of the mobile device, which is assigned by the manufacturer.
The last digit of the IME number is the Luhn digit, which is used for error detection. It is calculated based on the previous 14 digits of the IME number using the Luhn algorithm. This algorithm ensures that the IME number is valid and has not been tampered with.
The IME number is an essential tool for mobile phone manufacturers, network operators, and law enforcement agencies. It helps in preventing mobile phone theft by blacklisting stolen devices. When a mobile phone is reported as stolen, its IME number is added to a global database of stolen devices. Network operators can then block the stolen device from accessing their network, rendering it useless.
